7 ) If I need additional help is there someone I can turn to?
Yes. Lecturers are available for consultation by appointment after normal lecture hours and are always more than happy to answer any question or problem a student may have.

8 ) What is the difference between Honours and CTA?
In order for a student to obtain his Honours degree, he/she must pass all their subjects with a minimum of 50% for each subject. Whilst the Honours degree can be written over two (2) years, a student will receive his/her CTA if he/she writes all their exams during one exam period. It is important to note, however, that students may only write their final qualifying exams as required by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants if they are in possession of a CTA.

9 ) How does the CTA year mark and test system work?
The system works as follows: During the year 4 tests of 5 hours each are written under exam conditions. Each test contains questions from all 4 papers. The average mark of the 3 best tests will constitute the year mark. The year mark contributes 20% and the exam 80% towards the final mark.

10 ) If I don’t have matric exemption can I still study a B Compt degree?
If you don’t have matric exemption you have to do a bridging year at UNISA. Once you have passed this year, you may begin studying towards the attainment of your B. Compt.

11 ) If I received my degree through another university can I study Honours through UNISA?
As long as you majored in auditing, accounting and tax, you will be accepted to study for your Honours through UNISA. However, you will have to provide a transcript of your academic record together with a certificate of good conduct from you previous university to UNISA before you are permitted to register.

12 ) Can I study an Honours B Compt without completing my B Compt undergraduate degree?
You may be required to obtain additional credits such as commercial law and tax if you do not hold a B. Compt. degree (e.g. if you have a B. Com). If your degree fulfils the entry requirements of the Honours programme you may be accepted without having to obtain additional credits.

13 ) What is the difference between B Compt and B Com?
Essentially a B Compt is a B Com majoring in Accounting and Auditing. It is given a different name in order to distinguish it from the B Com degree because it is useful to know what subjects went into obtaining a degree. One can tell straight away that the holder of a B Compt degree has passed a range of substantial subjects while a person holding a B Com might have obtained it through studying a wide range of courses (for example a B Com graduate may have obtained credit for anything from Psychology to philosophy or history). The only courses for which credit is given in a Bcompt degree are strictly prescribed and there are no short cuts.

14 ) Why should I study for a B Compt?
Firstly, the B. Compt. is well respected and a highly sought after qualification in the business world. Secondly, it is the most direct route to becoming a Chartered Accountant. The syllabus for the B. Compt. degree follows exactly what is prescribed by SAICA and the degree is thus focused on training future Chartered Accountants.

15 ) What is the difference between a subject, course and module?
A subject is the discipline offered: eg Accounting, Economics. A course is the format in which the subject is offered at different levels. Some courses are divided into papers. All courses have a tuition period of one year. A module is a smaller study unit than a paper which may be offered in tuition periods of one year or in four months (semesters).

16 ) Can I write my exams at FLB?
You may write your exams at FLB if you have registered only for Bcompt subjects. The exam venue center number at FLB is 3332-012. Only FLB students may use this venue.

17 ) Are payment options available at FLB?
Yes. Students may pay by cheque, direct deposit, credit cards, post dated cheque.

18 ) Can I study for my UNISA degree through Forbes Lever Baker?
Yes. FLB has entered into an agreement with UNISA to lecture the UNISA syllabus. Students may register to either study full time or part time towards the modules they are registered for at UNISA. Once the UNISA requirements have been satisfied, the student will be awarded a UNISA degree.
