From the time I started lecturing the UNISA curriculum at Damelin in 1994, I realised then that I had a love for teaching. Like many successful people who first discover their passion in life, I decided that I did not want to be any ordinary teacher but make a difference in the lives of the students I was teaching. In 1996, I joined Midrand University and in 1997 was placed in charge of Midrand University’s B. Compt. Honours programme. After leaving Midrand in 1998, Steven Lever and I lectured the CTA programme. The problem I found during this time, however, was that while lecturing the UNISA board course as well as other courses for other institutions I couldn’t instill in my students the work ethic and study methodologies that I know are essential to becoming a successful C.A.. Subsequently, I joined forces with Steven Lever and founded a dedicated institute for prospective chartered accountants in 2000; an institute, which was soon to grow into what has now become known as the Forbes Lever Baker Training Institute for Accountants. Steven Lever CA (SA) obtained a B Com degree from WITS in 1989 and a B Acc degree from WITS in 1990. He obtained the Jonathan Tannenbaum award and the Jack Goldby Prize for being the top bachelor of accounting student at the University in 1990. In addition, he was president of the Commerce Faculty Students Council in 1998/9. He commenced with articles at Deloitte and Touche and assisted Wits in 1991 and 1992 with postgraduate management accounting whilst doing articles. He started lecturing UNISA students in 1994 and has been lecturing UNISA students since then. He has also lectured on the UNISA board course from 1997 to 2000, and on the FLB board course revision seminars in 2001 and 2002. He co founded FLB with Charles Forbes and Nizaam Baker in 2001 with the desire to help build the premier school for persons wishing to become Chartered Accountants in South Africa. These students, with their training, would hopefully become world class business leaders who through their later job positions would add value to society and create economic growth in South Africa. As is the case with all of the lecturers at FLB, I too have a love for teaching. This was one of the reasons that drove me to start the B. Compt. Honours programme at Midrand Campus in 1993. In 1995 I left Midrand and went on to lecture auditing at Wits, accounting at Allenby Campus and for the MBA programme at Milpark Business School. In addition to these posts, I have also been a lecturer for Applied Accountancy at UNISA in their department of Applied Accountancy. Although I took a brief hiatus from lecturing to become a director of a private accounting practice, my love for teaching brought me back to lecturing when I decided to join Steven Lever and Charles Forbes in the formation of FLB in 2000. |
